Can't upload multiple files, coordinates not adding
[edit]Hello,
In the past few days, Wikimedia has stopped auto-adding the coordinates from the files I've uploaded, and if I attempt to upload multiple files at once, it only shows me the first file I attempted to upload once I arrive at the "Describe" screen. If I attempt to submit, it then won't let me. I've tried switching browsers, but the problem persists. I imagine these two problems are related. Packer1028 (talk) 03:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
- I have the same problem since yesterday! It is IMPOSSIBLE to upload! WHAT HAPPENED!?? /Frankie Fouganthin (talk) 17:02, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- I figured it out, at least on my end. For me, it's the fact that I add image titles in my Photos app (I take almost all my images on my iPhone), as "captions" so that I can remember the thing I'm depicting. The ones that have the captions when I transfer the photos to my computer are the ones that create a problem. When I remove those before transfer from my phone, I don't have the issue. It might be something similar for you, if not exactly the same. (However, this has only been an issue very recently, so something has changed on Wikimedia's end, since this didn't use to be a problem.) Packer1028 (talk) 03:17, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

- @Packer1028 @Frankie Fouganthin We have two tickets for this bug, phab:T383428 and phab:T383508, so we are already aware of the problem. There is a patch incoming, but it's currently in the phase of being verified (meaning, we need to control that, by fixing this bug, we don't break something else). Unfortunately, you need to have a bit more of patience, hopefully the fix will be shipped with the next deployment, which might happen next week at this point. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 15:07, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Packer1028 @Frankie Fouganthin The patch for phab:T383508 has been integrated, can you please confirm that the problem has been resolved? Sannita (WMF) (talk) 13:12, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

how to add archive
[edit]how to add archive for user talk page? any help would be helpful! Sarim Wani (talk) 07:51, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Sarim Wani See COM:ARCHIVE. On en-WP, I usually use the method described at Help:Archiving (plain and simple), but I'm not sure that works on Commons. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

A way to find images with missing captions in a particular language
[edit]Greetings to all ! I'm a new contributor at Commons.
Are there a way to find automatically images with no caption for a particular language ?
Let's say I want to find images with no caption in English or French. Is this possible to do it automatically ? Anatole-berthe (talk) 08:03, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Anatole-berthe: descriptions or captions? {{Information}} template descriptions (in the "Summary" section) can be searched by looking for the presence or absence of language templates with en:WP:Petscan or similar. I am not certain how to search for structured data captions, possibly with en:WP:Quarry. MKFI (talk) 10:00, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- My interests are about "descriptions" and "captions".
- Thanks for the documentation that helped me to understand the difference between the two.
- I will analyse your suggestion about "Petscan" and "Quarry". Anatole-berthe (talk) 02:28, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- My interests are about "descriptions" and "captions".
- @Anatole-berthe: here is a practical example using Petscan: description search. It looks at Category:Ships and one level of subcategories for files which have German description but are missing both English and French descriptions. In the query options this is done using "Templates & Links" check for the presence of {{De}} language template and missing {{En}} and {{Fr}} templates. Please note that this does not work if the description text does not use any language templates at all which is fairly common for old images.
- You did not mention if you want to create missing captions or if you are looking for statistics. Petscan works on category level and wont be able to handle millions of files but will find you enough images to work on. Quarry is probably better for large scale statistics. Descriptions are the old way of using wikitext on file description page with quite a lot of variation; structured data captions are newer method and are much more rigidly defined, but many files do not have them at all. MKFI (talk) 09:56, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not looking on statistics. I just want to create descriptions and captions.
- Thanks you for your help ! Now , I just have to try what you said. Anatole-berthe (talk) 06:57, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

Request for Permission to use photos-figures for publication
[edit]Dear Madam, dear Sir, I hope this email finds you well and that all is going smoothly for you and your loved ones.
We are currently preparing an article for a Special Issue of the Geoheritage journal, which is part of a series stemming from the RIV3P8 conference we organized at our university last year. For more information, please visit https://sites.google.com/view/riv3p8.
To illustrate our paper, we would like to include photos/images of the reptile-like bird Archaeopteryx and the fossilized skeleton of a female ichthyosaur giving birth to youngs, providing evidence of ovoviviparity (eggs hatching internally as an adaptation to a fully marine lifestyle). Both fossils were discovered in Jurassic sediments in Germany. We find their inclusion is highly relevant to the topic of our article.
Would you kindly consider providing us with these images and granting permission to use them in our publication? Additionally, if possible, could you provide the correct citation reference so we can properly credit them in our bibliography?
Thank you very much in advance for your time and consideration. Should you grant us permission, we will ensure that the images are properly attributed in the article.
We remain at your attention for further information or if you wish to discuss specific conditions regarding the use of these images. We look forward to your positive response.
Best regards, Abdelmajid
- @RIV3P8 Thank you for your request. I believe this line at the foot of this (and every) page here meets your needs:
- "Files are available under licenses specified on their description page. All structured data from the file namespace is available under the Creative Commons CC0 License; all unstructured text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License; additional terms may apply. - If you find you have further questions please come back here and ask further questions. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:44, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- You asked this exact same question at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright and were answered there as well. Please don't ask the same question in two forums. It wastes people's time answering what someone else already answered. - Jmabel ! talk 03:49, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
Broken file link on Anna Karenina title page
[edit]File:AnnaKareninaTitle.jpg I'm hoping someone can fix this as I don't know how to. The largest file size (1994x3200) for this Anna Karenina title page has a broken link that prevents the file from loading. Categorization of memorials by their parts
[edit]Some memorials feature large-size objects, such as anchors, as their major parts (e. g., USS Chicago Anchor Memorial or Falklands War Merchant Navy memorial), but quote often those parts are only visible in a minority of photographs in the memorial category. Would it be appropriate to place the latter, as opposed to individual photos, in relevant subcategories of Memorial anchors by country and other anchor-related categories? 5.178.188.143 12:48, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- It's a trade-off. How prominent is the feature, how likely is it that we will have photos that don't show that feature, etc. If even 20% are likely not to show the feature, I'd probably push it down to the individual photos, not the category. And if we are dealing with something that has hundreds of images, a subcat specific to the feature might be appropriate, like how Category:Rudulph Evans's statue of Thomas Jefferson is an indirect subcat of Category:Jefferson Memorial. - Jmabel ! talk 18:33, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! Do photos which show the feature but only as a minor part of the image not really visible in resolutions commonly used in Wikipedia, such as Falklands War Merchant Navy Memorial 02.jpg, count here? 5.178.188.143 14:54, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- At some point, it's just a judgement call. For example, we would probably not put Category:Barber poles or a subcat on every single urban street view in which a barber pole is somewhere present, but I doubt we could define a neat line as to where we use it and where we don't. - Jmabel ! talk 21:19, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

Inquiry about copyright photos
[edit]My next question just to clarify. With commons am I able to have a separate username that is named after the that company I work for? I know Wikipedia doesn’t allow for company names to be displayed on username. But I’m wondering does that also apply to commons? Originally I uploaded the company’s photos directly to commons from my personal account and the license I used was that I was allowed by the owner to share photo. Because of this license commons deleted my photo because they thought I was infringing copyrighted material even though I was authorized to use the photo. So therefore I created a work username for commons for the purposes of uploading the photos to claim full ownership license. Is this something allowed where my username for commons is different than Wikipedia? Or do I keep uploading photos under one account and with change license to full ownership of photos? I just don’t want my photos to be deleted from commons because of this. AimeeOHNI (talk) 18:55, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- Please, see Commons:Username policy. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
- @AimeeOHNI: If the copyright is owned by the company, though, your account name is irrelevant. What we need is for some representative of the company (possibly you, since it sounds like you have the relevant authorization) to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
- Please don't re-upload the same files. Go through the COM:VRT process to get the deletions reversed. - Jmabel ! talk 00:24, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Uploading images from geograph.org.uk
[edit]I am trying to upload a file from geograph but it is an old CC BY-SA 2.0 licence which the upload wizard doesn't recognise. The image is TQ3952 : Oxted War Memorial. How can I upload it? Murgatroyd49 (talk) 10:04, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Murgatroyd49: Your link is to the gridsquare page, which covers 112 photos. Do you mean this one, 2720134? If so, it's already on Commons as File:Oxted War Memorial - geograph.org.uk - 2720134.jpg. But if it were one of the few Geograph images not yet on Commons, the best way to import it is to follow the "Licensing" link under the photo to the reuse page, scroll to the bottom and use the "directly upload this image to Wikimedia Commons" link. That fills in all the essential bits of Special:Upload for you, ready for you to choose "Upload file". --bjh21 (talk) 10:36, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Upload of tabular material
[edit]I'm trying to convert old charts from Wikipedia to the new .tab
and .chart
format on commons. Done editing my two files to upload but the upload wizard tells me 'Det uppstod ett fel i ditt bidrag Denna wiki accepterar inte filnamn med filändelsen ".tab"' (swedish for non accepted file suffix). The basic upload tells me the same. How are the files supposed to be uploaded? Arvelius (talk) 18:17, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with
.chart
. Where is that documented? "Data" space takes.tab
and.map
. I've never used it myself, but as I understand it you don't upload, you copy-paste or edit in place. For an example, see Data:MajorLeagueSoccer/mls-games.tab and click the edit tab (but please don't change that file!). - Jmabel ! talk 19:23, 27 January 2025 (UTC)- It's for the new chart feature where you'll have to upload a pair of a
.chart
and a.tab
file. As hand editing large json files is no fun at all it would be much appreciated if those formats would be open for upload. Well now I know that it is not yet handled, thanks a lot for a quick answer. The two ways I could think of to create an empty page is to create a red link in another page or directly manipulate the URL. Is there any more intuitive way to use for a format that is not allowed for upload? It seems that in contrast to Wikipedia you'll not get a link to create a new entry when searching for a filename that does not exist on commons. Arvelius (talk) 21:55, 27 January 2025 (UTC)- @Arvelius: Just edit offline and copy-paste. For a text file, that shouldn't be any harder than uploading. (Wikipedia doesn't allow uploading articles, either. In terms of editing ,"Data" space works just like article space.) - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

- OK in principle I can make a redlink on a page somewhere on commons just for the sake of creating a new page and then delete it when mission accomplished but that seems rather like a dirty workaround, an existing redlink to follow is rare to find on commons. There is no need for a link, in the end the chart is to be included by a template and not a link. I still don't see any link to create a page if I search for a not existing filename on Commons opposite to the behaivor on Wikipedia. But this conversation is just turning into contradiction, making me think of a lovely Monty Python sketch. I'll put it as input for the developers if I find the right forum some other time. Case close from my perspective. All the best. Arvelius (talk) 21:52, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

Someone HELP!!
[edit]So i have been trying to add an audio file
About the report of the German Invasion Of the USSR From 1941 but for the past 30 minutes it still says
File extension ".mp3" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (video/mp4).
even though it's an audio file! MalborkHistorian (talk) 18:36, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- As you may be able to tell from looking at the file names "mp3" and "mp4" or "mpg" are related file formats. For a variety of reasons, you maybe generated the file using software that saved it in some incorrect manner. My recommendation is that you take the local file on your computer and rename it from "foo.mp3" to "foo.mp4" and upload it. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:45, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- i can't do that because it says that the mp4 extension is not accepted by commons
so i tried doing the same with webm but it says :
File extension ".webm" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (video/mp4). - + it's not a video with a background its just a audio file straight from 1941 but enhanced
i tried to do the same thing with the ogg extension but it had the same as webm. MalborkHistorian (talk) 18:53, 27 January 2025 (UTC)- Correct, mp4s are not allowed here, so you will have to use a means to actually convert it from an mp4 to a webm file. You can do this with https://video2commons.toolforge.org/ online if you don't have the ability to do it yourself. You can also use that tool to strip out any video content and just save it as an audio file in an acceptable format such as MP3 or OGG. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:09, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- wtf. i just said that i tried posting the file as another version but with the extension webm but it still didn't work. MalborkHistorian (talk) 19:13, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, just changing the file extension will not work because the file isn't actually a WEBM file: its MIME type will not match. You need to use software that can actually convert an MPEG or MP4 into a WEBM. Just changing the file extension will not fix that. Did you do the thing I suggested you do above or not? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:52, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

- As a secondary issue, it seems like you are a new user who may need some general guidance on Commons. E.g. you uploaded File:Flooded Marienburg in March 1888.jpg and claimed that it was your own work. Are you telling me that you took a photograph in 1888 and you are uploading it in 2025? Legacy picture copyright
[edit]I am the curator of a collection of Austrian railway pictures that have been donated to our (unincorporated) society (the UK Austrian Railway Group). We are now in the process of winding up the society because of a lack of interest. Photographs have been donated over a period of some fifty years, with an understanding that they have been provided for us to use in publications. Over time, some photographer IDs have been lost (if we ever had them in the first place); licence to re-use was always implicit rather than explicit, though recently we did start asking for formal permission to re-use. Many of the photographers have now passed away, so we can't seek permission retrospectively. The photographs have never been commercially published, though some will have appeared in our own publications. We want the photographs to continue to be available for anyone with an interest and propose posting them here with an appropriate CC licence. Does this present you with a problem? ARG Legacy photos (talk) 17:07, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- @ARG Legacy photos: sadly, it sounds like you cannot provide an appropriate CC license, because that can only be granted by the photographer or the heir to their intellectual property rights, and it sounds like you've lost track of even the chain of provenance that would let you work out who could grant the licenses. Commons, which is probably as strict about copyrights as any one site on the Internet, would probably not be an appropriate host for these. Basically, you are sitting on a trove of works with orphaned copyrights, and someone might be perfectly happy to publish that, but we can't.
- I hesitate to make a specific recommendation as to where you might host these, but Flickr is possible (might require someone shelling out for a Pro account, but that's probably a small outlay compared to the work of digitizing such a collection). https://railroadfan.com could imaginably be interested, or someone there could have a better idea who would.
- Does someone else have a better suggestion what site might be willing to host thousands of railway photos with orphaned copyrights?
- Jmabel ! talk 21:45, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'd like to add my agreement to Jmabel's suggestion for Flickr. You may not be able to release the images completely, but at least you'll be able to show them. Of course, the ones you do have the rights to, please upload them here. Bastique ☎ let's talk! 22:24, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

Ask some detail of Bild 183-14059-0018
[edit]I am checking the copyright information of zh:檔案:Forth generals.jpeg on zh-wiki, but I have trouble checking the picture's detail. The picture was from Reddit. After searching, I got some info from Wikipedia for Schools. According to the site, the identifier is "Bild 183-14059-0018" by Bundesarchiv. However, when accessing the picture on the Commons, the picture was deleted. The deletion log says the picture's copyright holder is TASS instead of Bundesarchiv.
I can't access OTRS, so I want to know details - Is the zh-wiki picture "Bild 183-14059-0018"? What is the copyright status? I think the picture is now (2025) in public domain in Germany (or Russia?) but URAA-restored in the US, but I am not sure. Saimmx (talk) 17:37, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

- This depends on your situation, as far as I know.
- If you design the logo, or the school licenced the logo with a free licence: Upload the logo with a free licence.
- If the school ask you to upload their logo with a free licence: Send your permission to the VRT. See VRT guideline for details.
- If the school's logo is very old: Upload the logo with Template:PD-US-expired or a similar licence. Usually the logo has been used for maybe over 95 years like File:Harvard University logo.svg.
- If the school's logo consists only of simple shapes or text: Upload the logo with Template:PD-text-logo since it does not meet the threshold of originality. The TOO varies by where you live. See COM:TOO for details.
- Saimmx (talk) 19:21, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Jimbocarnia Is this about Draft:Angeline Academy of Innovation/[1]? Then, most likely per what Saimmx said, you can't upload the logo on Commons. However, if your draft gets accepted as an article, then you can upload it on English Wikipedia. If that happens (not before), go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and chose

Bread type

This type of bread is popular in South Asia under different names, like "পাউরুটি" (pāuruṭi) in Bengali and "डबलरोटी" (ḍabalroṭī or "double roti") in Hindi. However, it is not considered indigenous within South Asia, and considered "foreign" instead. So, I'm wondering about the type of this bread, as "পাউরুটি" or "डबलरोटी" can refer to any European bread, not just this one. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs • uploads) 07:24, 31 January 2025 (UTC)

Could someone else history comment be edited to remove some information?
[edit]The following file (mine) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barajas_T4_amanecer.jpg has an edit done by Dcoetzee in which he stated the removal of watermark, and includes a name. I have uploaded the original file with the watermark removed. Could their comment be edited to "Removed Watermark"? Halcor (talk) 14:48, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Halcor: It can be hidden, but not edited. I'm not sure what this all would accomplish, since the watermark is also still visible in the older versions of the file itself. Do you want those suppressed as well? - Jmabel ! talk 18:32, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- If possible yes.
- Hiding the watermark would be nice, but if not it is also fine, at least it can't be found via search. Halcor (talk) 21:12, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
Done - Jmabel ! talk 05:07, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I still see the watermark comment on Story. Is that expected? I understood it could be hidden? 79.117.123.124 19:30, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Halcor: I missed that one! Done now. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Perfect thank you, I don't know how to do it or if it is possible, but I am happy to change the license to a CC0 with no attribution required.

Help renaming a file
[edit]Greetings. I need help renaming an image file. I don't know how, and don't believe an unregistered user can.
The file is misnamed.
The whole thing is laid out here.
The explanation is lengthy, and detailed, but the logic for making the change is not. The requested modification ultimately is simple (and seeks consistency with a similar existing file, more appropriately named).
Can someone who can please make this change? Thank you. 2601:196:180:DC0:31BC:2F0F:F5E4:AC5 16:26, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- You can modify the description by editing the page. You can even add details to the description, e.g from the second paragraph of your comment on the talk page. Notifying Artanisen. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:17, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- I recognize this: I was waiting for some consensus on how the image should be renamed before altering its description, which would be completely cart before horse. Please see below. 2601:196:180:DC0:5DC1:4371:1A7D:4F86 00:24, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- FWIW, it does center on the Hudson River Valley, though I agree it is much broader than that. I don't think it needs renaming, but more description would be in order. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- I am aware the Hudson river is generally in the center of the image. The entire point of the renaming request it that: 1) that fact is completely subisidiary the totality of the image, which spans *five states* and *two countries*; there is no trace of any "Hudson River Valley" in the map (None. Neither by name, topographic depiction, or any other suggestion of such a thing being any geological reality.);
- and applying the term the "Hudson River Valley" is thus exceedingly confusing to all those familiar with it and its common usage (which has a very definite context, both as "America's Rhine" and a very specific demographic region).
- As such, the image name demands to be changed, eliminating confusion from its source. That is why I sought the assistance of someone who could help do so. Changing the description is helpful, but insufficient to address the problem of a misnamed image. Thank you.
- Is there anyone else out there who'd like to help with this? I've renamed an image (through assistance, using some kind of request template, as at Wikipedia) in the past (some years ago) and do not recall anything about the process, just the outcome (which was entirely satisfactory). Please see the full request here. Thank you. 2601:196:180:DC0:5DC1:4371:1A7D:4F86 00:34, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Commons can be somewhat conservative about renaming files.
- It's NBD. I've done it before - some years ago. It was purely pro forma.
- I think your proposed rename ("Blaeau Nova Beligica Et Anglia Nova (Detail Hudson River and surrounding regions).png") sounds fine,
- Great. That's a step in the right direction.
- but perhaps the uploader will have a view.
- They have no say. They surrendered their rights to the image when they posted it under that license.
- In the meantime, I don't really understand how editing the description is putting a cart before a horse.
- As I explained, I was seeking to get consensus on the image renaming first, then change the description to reflect it. Doing the opposite indeed is cart before the horse, and could derail consensus.
- The description and file name apply independently, if you can improve a description that seems positive on its own merits. CMD (talk) 09:05, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Per the above. Indeed, I can do that on my own. I can't rename the file (without assistance, or direction). I have been seeking that assistance as a 1st step (as explained immediately above).
- Does anyone know where the equivalent of the queue for posting article name change requests at Wikipedia is here at Commons? As I indicated, I have no idea anymore how whoever came to my aid did, or whether they simply directed me to the right place (to make a request). It was just total NBD.
- Anyone? Thank you in advance. 2601:196:180:DC0:71D7:8B93:1471:963C 19:02, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
Need check
[edit]First time uploading to commons. I need somebody to check if this image (to be used on wikisource) is uploaded correctly, with proper license, description, etc. Thanks. Ivan530 (talk) 09:20, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Ivan530: No, you should use the information provided at the source for date, author, and license. Please fix that. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:18, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Yann Is it correct now? Or did I do it wrong again? Thanks. Ivan530 (talk) 10:59, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, except the author, which I fixed. Yann (talk) 11:15, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Miss Ecuador 1930 Sarita Chacon.jpg
[edit]Good afternoon. I have uploaded a file that is used in English and Arabic Wikipedia. This photo of Sara Chacón Zúñiga is Miss Ecuador 1930, but the photo is easily used in the Arabic and English language sections, but for Russian it had to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Why don't there be problems in Arabic, but I have them?--Граф Рауль Валуа (talk) 12:45, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Граф Рауль Валуа: 1998 is certainly the wrong date for the photo. It is presumably from 1930, no?
- Are you sure this is eligible for Commons? To be allowed here it must be either in the public domain or free-licensed, both in its "home country" and in the U.S. We don't have initial publication information, but it would be reasonable to presume that the home country would be Ecuador. If it was first published in Ecuador in 1930, it will come out of copyright in the U.S. next year (1930 + 95 + 1 = 1926), but not yet. I'm not confident that it can be safely assumed to be out of copyright in Ecuador even then, if we don't know the author (and hence their death date). If we can determine who it was, and they have been dead at least 70 years, we are good. Otherwise, I believe we have to wait 120 years. That would mean we can't have this on Commons until 2051. It is possible that you know something here that I don't, and since we are already discuss it I'll wait for your reply before starting a deletion request.
- The image is on the English-language Wikipedia on the basis of permitted non-free use, based on en-wiki's Exemption Doctrine Policy. I would have to guess that it is hosted and used in ar-wiki on an analogous basis, but I do not read Arabic so I cannot confirm this. ru-wiki has an Exemption Doctrine Policy which I'm sure you can read more easily than I, so I'm just referring you to it.
- In short, I believe this image should not be on Commons, but I suspect it can be added locally to ru-wiki and used there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- 1998 is the date of the person's death. It's likely that I put the template in the wrong place. It's just that it's in both Arabic and English, but it wasn't included in the Russian article. There are such problems, but I know the photo itself was created in the 1930s. It's just that I use the photo for the infobox in a Russian-language article and it was a shame that the file wasn't installed and had to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Граф Рауль Валуа (talk • contribs) 19:08, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- Again, I see no reason the file cannot be added to ru-wiki, but it cannot be added to Commons, because it is not in the public domain, and is certainly not free licensed if it is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 4 February 2025 (UTC)

Request by XYZ 250706
[edit]Is there any way/rule to upload image by crediting the creator? XYZ 250706 (talk) 12:29, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @XYZ 250706: This is not sufficient. We need a permission from the author unless the document is in the public domain. Yann (talk) 12:47, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- What is defined by public domain in Wikipedia? Are social media, reliable news media included in public domain? I have seen some news media using some images by crediting the creator (a twitter page of political party). XYZ 250706 (talk) 13:05, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @XYZ 250706: No, that is not public domain. Public domain means that there is no copyright, either because it expired due to age, or it is not applicable because of law (e.g. US government works, works too simple to have a copyright, etc.). Nowadays, copyright usually expires 70 years after the author's death, or in some cases, 70 years after first publication. Yann (talk) 13:16, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

Help
[edit]I am trying to upload a better version of a image. As I click on the option, I am not able to understand the interface and know what all I have to fill and how? If someone could guide me it could be a great help.. AstuteFlicker (talk) 16:02, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- @AstuteFlicker: Please consult your filters log, which shows that you tried to overwrite files uploaded by other users. Please note that it is not useful to make multiple attempts. If there is a good reason to overwrite a file, you can request an exception to do so on the page Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:33, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
Delete Account
[edit]To, Wikimedia Commons Support Team Wikimedia Foundation [Wikimedia Contact Information] Subject: Request for Deletion of Wikimedia Commons Account "Coelbraou" Dear Wikimedia Support Team, I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to formally request the deletion of the Wikimedia Commons account "Coelbraou" due to an unfortunate mistake. Some copyrighted images were inadvertently uploaded under this account, and I wish to prevent any copyright violations. To rectify this issue and ensure compliance with Wikimedia’s copyright policies, I kindly request the immediate deletion of the "Coelbraou" account and all associated content. Please let me know if any further verification or steps are required from my end to expedite the process. I sincerely apologize for this mistake and appreciate your prompt assistance in resolving this matter. Kindly confirm once the account deletion has been processed. Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your response. Coelbraou (talk) 01:57, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hello user:Coelbraou, while files and contributions can indeed be deleted (which is a regular occurrence when dealing with copyright related problems), that is not possible for accounts. If any individual wants to separate himself from any Wikimedia project, he can ask for a block of his account. This amounts to a deactivation, but as stated, an account deletion is (technologically: the site's software does not offer this function) impossible.
- On the other hand, mistakes in uploading that may lead to copyright issues can and will get fixed quite fast. Local administrators would only need to know which file names are concerned, those would be dealt with. Honest mistakes won't harm prospects of later contributions. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 02:14, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc and Coelbraou: as I understand it blocking would be exactly the wrong thing to do. See meta:Account vanishing. - Jmabel ! talk 04:57, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
@Coelbraou: if you are aware of files that are still on Commons that you uploaded and that you now believe are copyright violations, it would be greatly appreciated if you would nominate them for deletion yourself instead of leaving someone else to work out which of your uploads are problematic and which are not. - Jmabel ! talk 04:57, 4 February 2025 (UTC)- Ah, looks like they are all already deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 04:58, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, I was not aware of the Meta page, I only explained the usual processus on DE-WP, where blocking with a mention "block by user's wish" is the common thing when someone wants to break off from Wikipedia. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 09:38, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
I uploaded an image that needs to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

- @Erol Karacabeyli: you say your source was a public domain file on Commons. It would be very helpful if you would link that file from the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 05:04, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- That would probably be File:Ibn rushd.jpg, which has a dubious claim of own work and is a photo (of the statue at the University of Barcelona) that was present on the internet before the copy to Commons, e.g. [3], [4], [5], although its original publication is not mentioned. -- Asclepias (talk) 07:41, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- I have added the link to that file Erol Karacabeyli (talk) 15:50, 4 February 2025 (UTC)

What is the copyright policy for things like video game title cards
[edit]Was making an article for a game called The Upturned but I stopped when I wanted to upload an image for its title because I don't really know the policy for it. It's just a standard title in the form of an image located on the game's store page, and titles like it are included in nearly every single Wikipedia article for a game there is. However, the problem is, this would definitely qualify as someone else's work, but I don't really know the policy for this kind of subject, especially since it's work very publicly available and used in many places. These cards seem to be used a lot, and clips and screenshots from video games are generally considered free-use to my knowledge, but I don't know if for something like this you might actually have to reach out to the original creator to get their permission. I think the answer has a reasonable chance of being yes, which would suck, but if not that would be pretty great, so if anyone knows anything about this that would be good. SapphireBandit (talk) 06:42, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- @SapphireBandit Welcome! I assume we're talking about something like Outer Wilds. That's non-free, can't be on Commons, but as you can see at [6], it's not uploaded on Commons, but on English Wikipedia, which allows non-free pics in some cases, like this, a book-cover, movie-poster etc, If it is for the use as a lead-image in a WP-article.
- So, if you make The Upturned a WP-article, then (not while it's a draft) you can add a title card as lead-image. Go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and chose "Upload a non-free file" > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is the official cover art of a work.
- I'm less sure what's considered ok concerning screen-shots etc, consider asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games.
- Hope this helps. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:16, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Gråbergs Gråa Sång, that helps a lot. Funny you mention Outer Wilds, it's my favorite game of all time easily. Wanted to make an article for The Upturned because it was my third favorite of all time, and this definitely helps a lot in that process. I'm gonna take your advice for a non-free upload, and in the meantime, I'll email Zeekerss(creator) so I can see if I'm lucky enough to get a response and permission for this. Stupid question
[edit]Just wondering if I can upload good quality photos of my cats to use personally for me? I know you are not supposed to upload photos of yourself or your friends but I did not see anything about pets, especially since I saw other people uploading their own photos of their cats? WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 17:41, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- @WhyIsThisSoHard575483838: I would say that, looking at your contributions, uploading a small number (like two or three) personal photos for use on your own user page would be fine. In general, though, until you get to the point of hundreds of uploads or a comparable level of contributions on other wikis, anything more than that would be excessive. - Jmabel ! talk 20:23, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Can I do one more for four? Just asking, thanks WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 20:27, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Also I do have almost 1900 edits on English Wikipedia, does that change anything? WhyIsThisSoHard575483838 (talk) 20:31, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, somehow when I checked I didn't see the extent of your en-wiki activity. Yes, four pictures would not be pushing it, as long as you will be using them on your user page. - Jmabel ! talk 00:27, 5 February 2025 (UTC)
- A few points: 1)Images to be used on one's own user page(s) by regular contributors to Wikimedia projects are fine. 2) "to use personally for me" - even if that is your main reason, you have to allow anyone else willing to abide by the terms of your license to use them too, since Commons is for free licensed media only. 3)While not required, it would be helpful if you can add basic description and categories to the photos more useful than just something general like "cats" (eg color, variety, what the cats are doing). 4) Not a "stupid" question; thanks for asking, that's how you get feedback.
